and let the earth and let

  them say among the

  nations, “The Lord

  reigns!”

 People: Every morning, stand to

  thank and praise the

  Lord; every evening,

  stand to thank and

  praise the Lord;

 Leader: When you bring your

  offerings, stand to thank

  and praise the Lord.

All: That He may teach us

  His ways and that we

  may walk in His paths.

  Amen.

PRAYER of INVOCATION from Neh 1:9-11

Confession and Assurance

READING of GOD’S LAW

Hear God’s Law, His Will for Your Life, from Matthew 5

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also . . .You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

PRAYER of CONFESSION    Ambrose of Milan

O Lord, I show my wounds to you and uncover my shame before you. I know my sins are many and great, and they fill me with fear, but I hope in your mercies, for they cannot be numbered. Lord Jesus, God and man, crucified for us, look upon me with mercy and hear my prayer, for I trust in you.

O Lord, You who are all-merciful, take my sins from me and kindle within me the fire of Your Holy Spirit. Take this heart of stone from me and give me a heart of flesh and blood—a heart to love and adore You, a heart which may delight in You, love You, and please You, for Christ’s sake, Amen.

ASSURANCE of PARDON     from John 3:16-17

Receive these words of comfort from God:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”

Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. Be assured, therefore, having confessed your transgressions in faith, that your sins are now as far as the east is from the west and you stand before the throne of God, clothed in grace.  Amen.

Life of Worship

PROFESSION of FAITH Westminster #1, 3, 24

Leader:  What is the chief end of

  man?

All: Man’s chief end is to

  glorify God, and to

  enjoy Him forever.

Leader:  What rule has God given

to direct us how we may

  glorify and enjoy Him?

 All: The Word of God—

  which is contained in

  the Scriptures of the

  Old and New

  Testaments—is the

  only sufficient and

  certain rule to direct us

  how we may glorify and

  enjoy Him.

Leader:  How does Christ give us

  the ability to fulfill this

  end?

 All: Christ, our Redeemer, is

  a Prophet, Priest, and

  King. As a Prophet, He

reveals to us the will of

  God for our salvation.

  As a Priest, He offered

  Himself as a sacrifice to

  satisfy divine justice

  and to reconcile us to

God. And as a King, He

  subdues us to Him-

  self, rules and defends

  us, and conquers all His

  and our enemies.

  Amen.

Ministry of the Word

SONG of ILLUMINATION        “Open My Eyes . . .”    CH #563

PRAYER for ILLUMINATION

SCRIPTURE READING            Luke 9:18-27 p.1030

Now it happened that as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him. And he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?” And they answered, “John the Baptist. But others say, Elijah, and others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.” Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

And he strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”
