READING of GOD’S LAW
Hear God’s Law, His Will for Your Life, from Luke 3:9-17
Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fer-vent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PRAYER of CONFESSION Romans 7:15-20
Pastor: Heavenly Father, we feel in
our deepest being the
lament of the Apostle Paul: “I
do not understand my
own actions. For I do not do
what I want, but I do
the very thing I hate.
People: For I know that nothing
good dwells in me—that
is, in my flesh. For I have the
desire to do what is right,
but not the ability to carry it
out.
Pastor: For I do not do the good I
want. But he evil I do not
want is what I keep on doing.
Now if I do what I do not
want, it is no longer I who do
it, but sin that dwells within
dwells within me.
People: For I delight in the law of
God, in my inner being,
but I see in my members
another law waging war
against the law of my mind
and making me captive to
the law of sin that dwells in
my members.
Pastor: Wretched person that I am!
Who will deliver me from
this body of death?”
All: Lord God, we repent of our
sins and our sinfulness
and leave them at the foot of
your cross. Amen. ◆
ASSURANCE of PARDON Rom 7:20, I Cor 15:55-57
Receive these words of comfort from God:
To his desperate cry, “Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” St. Paul answers, “Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Friends in Christ, having confessed your sins to our faithful Savior, be assured that you stand pure and spotless in the sight of the Father. Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen. ◆

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,
For thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, forever. Amen. ◆
